Meenakari is famous art of Jaipur, Rajasthan which came to India with the Mughal era. Although the art is historically originated in Persia, it gained popularity in India under the reign of Raja Man Singh of Mewar.
The term “Meenakari” is a compound word composed of two words “Mina” and “Kari” where “Mina” in Persian means paradise or heaven and “Kari” means to do or to place something onto something else. Together, “Minakari” means paradise onto an object.
Meenakari is not just limited to traditionally gold or silver jewellery but expands into other products with a wide variety of metals including brass, copper, aluminium and other metal or alloy and also on marbles and other stones. Enamel colours chiefly consists of metal oxide mixed with a tint of finely powered glass which is hand painted on the embossed designs made on the metal..
