Our Plastic Pollution Problem

Most toothbrushes available on the shelves of our local markets are made of plastic. However, plastic toothbrushes pose a huge threat to the environment. The average person uses about 3-4 toothbrushes a year. Now imagine that number multiplied by the world’s population.

Once a plastic toothbrush is used, it is disposed of. The toothbrush, just like most of the world’s trash either goes into a landfill or ends up in our oceans. In the landfills, these plastics are often burned which releases toxic fumes into the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide, mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls. Not only is this harmful to human health, but this further accelerates the serious greenhouse gas problem that our world is currently faced with. Greenhouse gasses are responsible for accelerating the rate of climate change. This is in part due to the burning of plastic products - such as plastic toothbrushes. The burning of plastics is deeply worrying as it leads to further environmental issues.

What is particularly concerning about this fact is that plastic toothbrushes take approximately 500 years to degrade. This means that there is plenty of time for the plastic toothbrushes to be mistaken as food by marine animals, be it in the ocean or along the beach shores.

The billions of plastic toothbrushes that are filling our oceans impacts us as well. Plastic degradation creates microplastics are small pieces of plastic debris that are less than 5 millimeters in length (which is roughly the size of a sesame seed). These microplastics end up in the digestive systems of fish. Thereafter, when we eat these fish, we consequently end up consuming microplastics that are contained in these fish. The fact that plastic contains multiple toxic chemicals, continuous ingestion of microplastics can be perilous to human health.

Given the detrimental impacts of plastic, we at Artisan Soul are making a conscious effort to do our bit for the environment as the world takes a mindful step towards a greener future. As such, we are selling toothbrushes made of pure bamboo.

Bamboo Toothbrush Benefits

The advantage of bamboo is it is BPA-free. This is an important consideration since the toothbrush is coming into contact with your mouth for an extended period of time. Seeing as bamboo is naturally occuring in the environment, it is free from toxins and safe to be used as a toothbrush. Just like Sabai Grass craft, the cultivation of the bamboo materials that go into the creation of Artisan Soul toothbrushes are sustainable and environmentally-friendly.

Bamboo toothbrush advantages also extend to the fact that since the toothbrush is made of bamboo, which is a natural plant, you can compost the toothbrush handle and it will degrade naturally, without leaving any harmful chemicals in the soil.
